Help me choose a logo – Adventures in online branding with HP Logoworks
filed in alt.random on May.05, 2010
I thought I’d tart up my blog and give HP’s Logoworks design service a whirl at the same time. This post has two purposes.
- Get your feedback on my current batch of logos thoughts (See the section titled “Need your help“)
- Share my experiences with HP Logoworks (so far, so good. Excellent in-fact)
Why do I want a logo and what on earth do I want my logo to say?
To cut a long story short, I wanted a logo for my blog (this one). It’s a personal blog, so I wanted something fun and frivolous. I certainly didn’t want the cliched padlock or safe. I also really wanted to try and have a picture based logo rather than pure text.
This logo really inspired me to have a stab at creating a logo. I’m pretty sure you’ll agree that @securityninja’s logo is awesome. Note: I didn’t want to blindly have his logo copied, so I didn’t mention it in my brief to Logoworks (read on)…

One of my favourite security logo's. This one's a classic. His blog is well worth a read too. http://www.securityninja.co.uk/blog UPDATE: These guys created the securityninja blog. This sort of design would appear to be for bigger budgets... still, it's very cool http://www.digit.ie/
Logoworks
If you’re not familiar with Logoworks, it works pretty simply.
- You select a design package. The key thing to be aware of here are the number of initial concepts you’ll be provided with and the number of revisions you’ll be able to make. I went for the “Gold” package with unlimited revisions.
- You provide a design brief, providing basic information on your company or sites mission, the general feel (fun v serious, classic v contemporary etc), colours your like/dislike and whether you’d prefer text versus a picture (or a combination there of.)
- You review some concepts. Essentially, your design brief goes out to tender and a number (depending on the design package) or designer pick up the work. You get your first batch of concepts back within about 5 days.
- You pick a concept to take to the next level and provide feedback on what you liked/didn’t like from the original concepts. At this stage you can request the designed to incorporate a variety of ideas. Of course, if you like the first concept, you can pick it and be done.
- You review revisions and go through any number of iterations to refine your logo.
- You complete the process and get your logos.
What I chose to work with
If you scroll to the end of this post, you’ll see the initial concepts I got back. I wanted a combination of the follow two concepts.
Round 1 – 4
I was drawn to the nerdy, fun, superhero look. I didn't like the text/font and I'm not sure about the colour, but this guy made me smile.
Round 1 – 5
I liked the text... thought it could be used in places where the cartoon character simply wouldn't fit. Should I have used one of the other text logo's (scroll to the bottom of the post to view them)
Need your help
So, now I’m at stage 5 of the design and now have 3 revisions to consider. I need to choose one of the following logo’s to have refined even further. What do you think?
Round 2 – 1a
2nd Round Logo Design. I'm not happy with the colours, but I like the general direction. Maybe offset the text to the right a touch?
Round 2 – 1b
Same as the previous image, I just wanted to see what it'd be like on black (I modified this one, that's why it looks amateurish)
Round 2 – 2a
Round 2 Logo - B - Those who know me, know I like my coffee from Starbucks. Here's a play on a famous brand. I don't like the font/letter spacing, but I do kinda like it. Not sure where this would leave me from a legal/branding position.
Round 2 – 2b
You’re comments, DM’s, emails would be much appreciated as I figure out where to go next.
Thanks.
Initial Concepts
Here’s what I got back initially and what I thought…. did I get it wrong? it’s not too late for me to change back.
Round 1 – 1
I really liked this design, but had a nagging doubt that it was a little bit to "Vendor Cheesy"/ "Security Cliche" . I still anguish on this one, was I too quick to dismiss it?
Round 1 – 2
Round 1 – 3a
Round 1 – 3b

… well, I like the top Superhero guy in black and yellow, it’s kinda a danger sign black and yellow
and I like the text of Security G33k in the grey, black GK red 33 (below the shield logo) could you use that text finishing with the 33 running through the hero type guy…

IMHO the one w/the (oddish) blue w/different blue colored cape & gradated 33 looks the best so far.
You might want to number them to make it easier to describe.

@Steven Gill – funny you should mention that. I had requested that already to see what it would look like. I’ll keep you posted/ thx for the input

Hi Risa… good thinking. I numbered them

I like the very first one – yellow guy with the black bacckground.
I love yellow and it constrasts very well indeed with black.
It will stick out from your page and WILL be noticed and is, therefore, great for branding which is just what you need.
You could also just take the image of the guy and use that as an avatar for Twitter etc and then people will get the association when they click through to your blog.

Unlike me because I used the wrong email address with the preceding comment!
D’oh!

After your praise of the Security Ninja logo and blog I thought it would be rude not to come here and comment!
As I said on Twitter I liked Round 1 – 2 and Round 1 – 3b but the super hero character should be included if you can, probably a slightly different looking super hero though in my opinion.

I like ‘Round 2 – 1a’. And I agree securityninja’s logo is awesome.

I’d just work the colors on Round 2 – 1a. I sent the color values to you via FB. I also LOVE the little ninja.
Black is generally not the best color for backgrounds because people with low vision have problems viewing content.
On the other hand last year I found out that some people have the opposite problem (but I’ve only met two.) They have to invert their monitors so that every thing is black background.

2-1a i like apart from arms and legs look too fish like. Liking 1-1 too, nice and retro, maybe change colours.
